JJD, I didn’t know they charged extra for analog 3D. I think they also charged extra for other enhancements, such as Smell-O-Vision, Odorama, vibrating seats for “The Tingler”, 70mm roadshow movies, and probably Sensurround, the precursor to D-Box. It would be cool if D-Box was installed in a few of Rockaway’s big theaters so that moviegoers can feel the movie. This is the case at many IMAX digital and analog theaters, where seats are configured to vibrate along with the subwoofer. Does ETX also do this sort of thing?
Attendance at this theater has declined somewhat due to the price increases on both 3-D and regular movies during the summer, which will hurt AMC’s bottom line in the future according to its latest earnings report. This as the company is ready to return to the volatile stock market this year. JJD, between this theater and the old theaters, will this theater last as long? If fewer people come to the movies, then this theater might turn into another retail shop or a strip mall, which Rockaway doesn’t need.
Sounds good…how many slimshady? Pretty soon all 15 screens will have 3D, in addition to the liemax 3D. I can’t wait for Paranormal Activity 2 in Liemax, since that was shot in digital camera and will be blown-up on the very giants screen lol!!!
I agree. Paranormal Activity 2 was shot on HD cameras and will be blown-up IMAX-style on the big screen using IMAX’s infamous DMR process, which I saw with Inception at the AMC in Rockaway and thought was a bit blurrier than a normal digital presentation.
Ticket prices are outrageous at this theater..although it’s one of a few true IMAX theaters to show film. BTW, all 13 screens are now digital. The Social Network is being shown in blown-up format, which makes the film a bit blurry on that giant IMAX screen lol. No new IMAX films until Harry Potter 7 and Tron 2. Tron Night is sold out (20-minute sneak peek of new 3D movie).
I can’t believe this theater is still open while other theaters offer better projection, prices, surround sound, and 3D. This is as old-school as mall movie theaters gets.
Ticket prices have gone up $2 since this theater opened, to $11 which is the same as Rockaway. Also I’ve seen a bunch of screens got digital, slimshady. Are the THX signs still near theaters 8 and 9?
how is the conversion going? Moviegoers who want to go to an AMC theater are being forced by AMC to visit their New Brunswick location, per AMC’s website.
Judging by checking the ticket showtimes on AMC’s website last night, Jackass 3D is selling like hotcakes. The late night showtimes for My Soul To Take 3D are greyed out. Wonder if its because of Jackass playing on the same screen as the Wes Craven movie. If it is, then the guys who program the showtimes for the theater are very happy with the results.
The projection that they’re doing for this event is 4k, since the film was restored with 4k technology. The Bluray will come out in November. I saw Sound of Music on VHS in widescreen THX, and it was fun to watch. It was on one tape, although the intermission music and overture was cut out for length reasons. Back to the Future is also doing a promotion like this for its 25th anniversary.
In other 3D news….“Jackass 3D” opened big yesterday with $20 million, on its way to around $40 million, which would be the highest grossing opening for a movie in October. That movie, unlike Harry Potter, was shot in 3D using the Phantom camera and has gotten great buzz from fans. 3D is back once again. Expect more of the same from “Saw 3D”, “Megamind”, and “Tron 2” and “Yogi Bear”. Yes, the tickets are expensive, but seeing is believing.
It’s theaters like this that are killing the small fry, such as in newton,n.j. which was closed last week for good. See the comment on the newton theater page for more info. When this theater opened nearly four years ago, it had a wide variety of flicks for everyone to see. The projection though, was horrible and the sound was very loud in each theater. It has matured into a popular moviegoing destination for greedy moviegoers who want to see the latest LieMAX, Digital 3D, Met Opera, NCM event, and digital 2k-4k movies in what’s the best movie theater in northwest new jersey. Now only if they have sometime like Free Movie Tuesdays, which Clearview does.
Advance tickets for Tron Legacy are now up as of Sunday. I’ll be probably seeing the IMAX 3D version since I saw a trailer that showed IMAX scenes during Inception, ala Dark Knight. Too bad the new Harry Potter movie’s first part will be only in 2D digital and IMAX digital, as WB didn’t have enough time to convert that part into 3D. Part 2 will be in 3D next year. Speaking of 3D, I think Megamind might do well since the trailer looks funny. This coming weekend, “Jackass 3D” will be on a bunch of 3D screens ( i heard it got good buzz).
Sad to see it go. What a shame. I wonder if it will become retail or a performing arts building, which newton really needs although SCCC has an auditorium in its building.
Speaking of which, last night, I saw “The Social Network”, which was shot on 4K. The titles and some of the computer images were sharp, the motion very film-like without any grain at all. The only thing that was different on my visit to this theater last night was that they cut off the Sprint cell phone ad and started the previews on time since the pre-show was running a bit late. As for the food, AMC is doing a good job putting calorie counts for each concession on the menu much like what they do at sports stadiums. BTW, here’s a link to the tech specs of the movie, which I think will have strong legs based on good word of mouth…http://tinyurl.com/32o8ghb
Hey Slimshady, are you hiding under a rock? You’re prediction was right. As in “Sharing”, several screens are showing multiple 3D movies, while the other screens are mostly Sony 4K 2D projectors.
Here’s a suggestion for AMC….remove the liemax screen in that one auditorium and replace it with an ETX screen. Hopefully it won’t be infected by giant bedbugs!!! Also, the price of food at this theater is more expensive than other local theaters in Morris County. During a screening of “The Town”, i didn’t see any trailers for “The Tourist” and “The Fighter” as promised online, just random trailers. One trailer, Unstoppable, looked pretty sharp, and another one, Hereafter, sounded pretty loud toward the end. I’ll probably see “The Social Network” this coming weekend, since it was shot on 4K.

I don’t know about that, JJD.

Ticket prices have gone up dramatically since this theater opened….prime ticket is $12, a $1 more than Rockaway.
2 of them in 3D. Jackass is playing in 2D at this theater, alongside the 3D version.
all screens now digital, with 4 3D screens.
how’s the conversion going?

When I visit this theater for the first time, what should I expect?

It was shot that way, RCDTJ. Making it digital looks like you’re watching a high def bluray.
maybe. I heard it got decent reviews. Hopefully it gets good word of mouth.
