This was a great 1-screen theater. I remember seeing ‘Star Trek VI’ and ‘Lethal Weapon 4’ at this theater before its closing. What a shame. Another classic theater gone.
Does anyone know where one can possibly find new and different pics of the Vancouver Sun movie listings from the 1980s (for this theater and others)? I would live to see more of those photos.
ScreenClassic is right; the official name for this theater in papers was ‘West Van Odeon’. I saw many movies here as it was 1 of only 2 theaters on the North Shore (the other being Park Royal, also long since closed). I remember seeing ‘Return of the Jedi’ more than once at this theater.
Having grown up in North Vancouver, this is the theater I went to the most (there was no movie theater in North Vancouver until Park & Tilford opened). I saw most of the Disney classics at this theater, including ‘Sleeping Beauty’, ‘Bambi’, ‘Pinocchio’, ‘The Jungle Book’, ‘Cinderella’ and ‘The Aristocats’ here, in addition to such 80s classics as ‘The Empire Strikes Back’, ‘Gremlins’, and ‘Superman II’. I was disgusted by Park Royal Management’s decision to demolish this theater & the bowling alley next to it, to replace them with ugly ‘big box’ stores – some of which lasted only a short time!
I remember seeing a lot of movies at the old Capitol 6, namely ‘The Ghost and The Darkness’, ‘Alien’, and ‘Titanic’. I agree with rl_83 that FP neglected it sadly and letting it die the way they did; sadly, this seems to have been their policy with a lot of classic Vancouver-area theaters.
Here is another photo of the Coronet, from 1985:

I remember this great theater so well…saw many classic films there, including ‘Star Wars’, ‘Fantasia’, ‘The Empire Strikes Back’, ‘The Untouchables’, ‘Indiana Jones & the Temple of Doom’, and ‘Indiana Jones & the Last Crusade’. This theater had a sound system superior to many modern ones, in addition to being extremely well maintained. I was disgusted with Famous Players for abandoning it and with then-Vancouver mayor Gordon Campbell for trying to sell it off to his developer friends. Glad to see it is well maintained, though it no longer shows movies of any sort.
Thank you for that link hermangotlieb! AWESOME!

I remember seeing ‘Gladiator’ and the re-released ‘Star Wars’ trilogy here. Yet another theater gone.
Park theater is gone; not sure if Dunbar is still in operation.
I remember when this was the Downtown Famous Players.

I remember seeing ‘Crocodile Dundee’ and ‘The Lost Boys’ at this theater. Sad it has gone the way of so many classic 1- or 2-screen theaters.
