Deandi Theatre

The Deandi was huge and it was decidedly silent. While the Mission was first to transition to sound in Amarillo, the Deandi just wouldn’t. And on October 3, 1929, it played the last ever released U.S. silent film with “Points West” by Hoot Gibson. And then it played “Tarzan, the Tiger,” a transitional film available both in silent and sound (ad at right). Proudly, the Deandi played it silent. Publix (ad at bottom) would shutter the theater in April of 1930 and the massive theater was no more. But the Deandi would draw audiences with lines outside the theater for the World Series on it Electronic Scoreboard (middle) and will be remembered for its showing of silent films and vaudeville.
