The Park Theater was where my Mom and dad went to as teenagers. It became a Bohacks supermarket in the late 60’s and then a Key Food in the 70’s. Everytime I go there I sneak off to the bathroom which maintains it’s movie theater style. It feels like you just steped into a Time warp. I grew up on 445-43rd street right down the block.
This is the other theater I went to when I lived on West 13th. I have seen many a film here including “White Nights” in 1985 and the last film I saw there was “L.A. Confidential” in 1997. My wife hated the theater because when they seperated the floors they kept the same screen. It was horrible.
Now continue talking about the plans for Regal cinema to re-open.
I actually saw a free screening of “Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight” here after a Fangoria Weekend of Horrors gave out free tickets. Actually had a blast.
I go to the “new” State theater that shows second run features and Indian movies for $5. The last film I saw there was the modern day classic “School of Rock” with Jack Black.
Alot of you guys failed to mention that John Travolta as Tony Manero in “Saturday Night Fever” (the quintisential Brooklyn film) is walking down 86th street after he buys his pizza and the Oriental is in the background showing “Rocky” and “Network”. This is a great scene in a great film and great theater. the last film I saw there was “Mr. Mom” in 1984.
I remeber seeing such classics as “Ghostbusters”, “Purple Rain” and “Back to the Future” here before they closed down in the late 80’s. I remeber my Mom and my sisters waiting in line to see “Blazing Saddles” in 1975 and by the time we got to the window the tickets were sold out and we came home dissapointed. Alot of violence helped close down the theater.
I can’t believe this theater finally closed. When I lived on West 13th street we would go there all the time to see the movies. The last movie I saw there was “The Haunting"in 1999 (which was a major dissapointment). But I saw "Spice World” there and I saw “Titanic” there and I saw “Wild Things” there. I also saw “Hoffa” there with Lisa when I was going to Brooklyn College. Sad news indeed.
I remeber going there to see two films, “Scream” and “Payback”. I never went again cause all the kids were making a ruckus and we couldn’t here the movie. My friend Mike was a manager there and he gave me the Beatle stand ups to the Anthology album in 1996.

I remeber buying a program there and then after seeing the films walking out across the street to a store that sold the trading cards to the movies. It was a happy memory of a happy childhood.
I remeber seeing “Dead Presidents” there a few weeks before they shut down and the theater was in shambles. The Times Square denizens went there to do assorted illegal activities and the theater suffered for it. What a shame!
It’s sad to see this theater closed for it’s the first time my wife and I saw a movie together. “Forrest Gump” played here and we saw it with my friend Frank. It was great and we came home talking about the movie all night and broke night and went home at 6:30 a.m.
I have been to the Cobble Hill many atime to see the Art House flicks they don’t normally show anywhere else. I saw “Ed Wood” there on a sneal preview where my wife and I received a collectors shirt from the film. I also saw “The Mask” there with my summer camp group in 1994. My sister and I (and nobody else) saw David Lynch’s “Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me” there as well. The last movie I saw there was “Batman Forever” in 1995.
This is where I saw Chow Yun Fat for the first time in film and in person. I saw “Hard Boiled” with “The Killer” in a double feature that changed my life and made me want to go into film. This theater was known to show many a Hong kong Retrospective before they went Art House 100%. I also saw Chow Yun Fat there when they gave one of his retrospectives there in 1996. I got his autograph and we spoke about his American Debut in “The Replacement Killers”. The last film I saw there was the controversial French Rape Film “Baise Moi” about two or three years ago.
I remeber seeing Lawrence Kasdan’s “Grand Canyon” there and thinking it was a masterpiece. My friend Frank and I went to go see it again but the second showng was sold out. The theater was beautiful and you could see where the old majesty of what once was on the ceilings and the sides but I haven’t been there since.
Great theater where I saw “The Mumnmy” in 1999 after attending my friends Dave and Joe’s Brooklyn College Art Show somewhere deep in Chelsea. Also saw “The truth about Cats and Dogs” there with my wife in 1997.
The Angelika may not be better than The Film Forum but it has shown a classic or two in it’s time. This is the theater that brought “Bubba Ho-Tep” to New York. It’s also the theater that showed the Italian Horror Masterpiece “The Beyond” uncut with Quentitn Tarantino in the audience and free eyeballs to the first 100 customers. It is also where I saw “Bad Lieutenant” for the first time and “Clockwork Orange” for the last. It was also the theater that introduced me to Japanese Anime Porn with “Legend of the Overfiend”. Angelika is convenient to get to and fun once you get there.
The Film Forum is the best revival house in the city and has showcased some of the best films of the past century. With their retro showcase of Film Noir, 70’s films and Sci-Fi Horror Festivals, the Film Forum beats out any other Reveival house in New York (and dare I say…The World?). Film Forum got me through my Film classess at Brooklyn College with their Annual (not anymore-but why not bring it back?) Sci-Fi/Horror Summer Festival where they have shown everything from the William Castle Gimmick classics to the recent Anime explosion of the 90’s. Film Forum is where I took my wife on one of our first dates to see “Dr. Strangelove”. It is also where I saw the classic Pacino film “Cruising” for the first time. It is also where my friend Frank and I got to see Brooklyn Classic “The Warriors” over and over again. There should be a Film Forum all over the world.
The Fortway Theater was also a two feature house throughout the 70’s until 1988 when they also became a multiplex. I remember getting driven there every Sunday in the 70’s by my father so my Mom and my sisters would all go see the newest feature. “Jaws 2”, “Animal House”, “The Shining” and other classics played there to packed houses. After the multiplex came the theater started togo downhill and the seats and decor have almost all gone and fade away. I still go there cause they have some of the films the Alpine can’t get.
Since when did this site become a place to vent anger and frustration at the high cost of the movie going experience?
The Alpine showed two films in their theater from the late 60’s until the early 90’s when it beame a Cineplex and addedd six more screens. My cousin was manager there from 1988 til 1991 when it was still a two theater house and they were showing “Flatliners” with “Excorsist III”. Though the Alpine has declined because of the age of the workers who tend to denegrate the movie experience with their classic Teenage Angst, the theater is still better than The Fortway up the blocks. My nephew worked there recently and says it’s getting worse.
The Coliseum was my second home since my Grandmother ran numbers out of their lobby from 1969 til 1985. This theater was a second run theater that showed mainly double features of Sci-Fi/Horror, Blackploitation, and Kung Fu Films one week and Spanish Films the next. In 1985, the owner closed for six months and revamped the whole theater making it into a two floor, four theater picture house that showed first run films. In 1988, after trying so hard to make it work, the theater was closed due to a loss of revenue. Kids would come in and pay for one feature and spend all day sneaking into the others. Also there were some violent incidents that helped close the theater down quicker. The last film to show there was “Child’s Play”. In 1992, the theater was sold to the Temple de Alabanza Pentacostal Church and has been there since it opened in 1993.
I saw McCabe and Mrs. Miller there as well so we were in the same audience probably same nght too.
