Lenox Square Theater Marquee
This is the original sign for Lenox Square from when it opened in 1959. The theater sign was added in 1963 which is when the wing with the theater, Colonial grocery store, and bowling lanes opened. This picture is from July 25, 1975, the opening day for Rollerball. Love And Death was starting its 6th week and was still doing sell out business. The day before, Return of the Pink Panther had ended its 6 week run while still doing turn away business on the weekends.
This sign could be reached with a 6 foot step ladder, and in October 1972 someone swapped the first letters of the two titles that were playing and it stayed up for an entire morning rush hour to see. The attractions at the time were DUCK YOU SUCKER, and FIDDLER ON THE ROOF.
This entire sign was replaced in the summer of 1980 when the plaza over the theater was enclosed to create the food court. The new sign was only accessible by bucket truck so the theater, which was a quad by then, had to submit the titles to mall management by Tuesday for changing on Friday morning.
