Birth of a Race (1918)
The one movie that we know was shown at the Blackstone Theatre. Birth of a Race was released Dec. 1, 1918. A D.W. Griffith film that has several scenes of racism. The original story for the film was Emmett J. Scott’s vision. Half way in production of the film direction of the story was changed and much of the filmed footage was thrown out, changing the outcome of the movie. The outbreak of WW1 has always been the reason given for the shift in focus from the original story. Emmett’s vision for the film survives to this day in the George P Johnson Negro Film Collection at UCLA.
