The Plaza 21 Drive-In opened on June 15th, 1978 and renamed the Highway 21 Drive-In in 1980. Grand opening ad posted.

The 1980-82 Motion Picture Almanacs listed the Plaza 21 Drive-in in Beaufort, owned by P. Trask, capacity 300. (There’s a Yelp page that still calls it the Plaza 21. And Google Maps calls the highway in front of the drive-in the Trask Parkway. Hmm.) For the 1984-88 editions, it had the Hiway 21, owned by J. Warren.

The Island News wrote that the drive-in closed in 2002. Bonnie and Joe Barth bought the Highway 21 and reopened it in 2003, per The Post and Courier of Charleston.

After a successful fundraising drive in 2012, the Highway 21 Drive-In is making the digital transition. They recently completed resurfacing and repainting the screens, and the new projectors are scheduled to be installed the first week of April.

Wow, they twinned the Highway 21 Drive-in.Last time i caught a movie there it was a single screen. I got there early and the NEW owners were such a joy to visit and snap pictures. We talked theatres Problems they were having Booking certain films {Disney} and just a great time.I saw the new screen thanks to Chuck,We always tried to go to the Highway 21 Drive-in while in Hilton Head. The First time i visited with Video Camera the old man running the Drive-in with his Crabby wife about threw me and the family out.I had no desire to tape “HOME ALONE” just the Drive-in.This old man had a fit. Most, if not all theatre owners of Drive-ins are impressed if you want to shoot video.BELMONT DRIVE-in and the BIG-MO Drive-in{both on CT} had no problem with me shooting tape.Heck,I taped Richard at the BIG-Mo running the platter. But these two folks that use to run the DRive-in here,Well, like the new owners told me they"had just about run off all the business"You just don’t expect that rude of folks from South Carolina. Glad to see the Highway 21 Drive-in open and i still have the hand fans you all gave me to keep, plus the red drink cup with Highway 21 Drive-in on it. I wish you guys the best.
