This small multiplex in the Nanuet Mall South shopping center opened December 7, 1979 with one screen. The other three screens opened by December 25, 1979. It survived up to June 2000 or so, around the time that the Loew’s Palisades opened up. Now unrecognizable and cut up into stores and Premier Fitness.

The theatre featured five screens—two seated 500 each. It was actually quite a large plex. When Loews took over Cineplex Odeon, they turned the Movies 5 Nanuet into an art house. When the lease ran out, the place closed and was gutted.
Yes, somewhat large, but then again quite undistinguished, with the most generic, boxy strip mall architecture possible. Had no identifying characteristics. I do remember seeing “Pink Floyd: The Wall” there first run. It will not be missed.
In 1997 there was a huge blackout in Rockland. This theater was one of the few places open. I went to see Cop Land – halfway through, the theater blacked out. Only a year or two later it closed, I showed up to view the interior wreckage, they mistook me for someone else and let me in to poke around.
It was a nice alternative for our art house movies to Montclair – now Palisades thanks to cheaper digital distribution is getting more and more art house films (including a few that didn’t come to Montclair). It had originally split bookings with the UA in Spring Valley, and both tanked when Loews opened. Both theaters were successful and became ghost towns when Palisades opened: now Regal is trying its hand at a 12-plex with an RPX screen at the revitalized mall (which will be a hybrid mall and outdoor life style center) – and it will probably work (the AMC at Palisades has seen better days but still serves its purpose).
This opened on December 7th, 1979 with one screen. The four others opened by Christmas Day.
Please update it to Movies Nauet. It opne as a independent operator. RKO Century took control in the around 1984-1986.
Outside facade is almost exactly the same all these years later, but the space is divided into multiple stores. Currently Quest Diagnostics, Bounce U, Tiger Schulmann’s and a few more.
I knew this was open past 1998, as my one memory of the theater is going to see Muppets from Space there in summer 1999. It appears this was open until summer 2000 (if not later): I found newspaper ads for Gladiator and Gone in 60 Seconds playing there in June.
