Here’s a new 4-page 50th anniversary FIDDLER ON THE ROOF retrospective featuring a roadshow playdate chronology and historian Q&A. The Edgewood’s run is mentioned in the piece.
As kids in the late 60s and early 70s we would cajole one of the neighborhood parents to bring us here from Orange Park on Saturday mornings to watch cartoons and then a Disney-esque feature. There was a weekly coupon in the Times-Union (featuring a smiling Bugs Bunny on it) that would get you in for, I think, 25 cents.
My dad ran movies here back in the 70s, Art Casner was the manager at the time. The theater brings back a lot of memories from my childhood.
I’m pretty sure this was owned by Plitt Southern Theaters. Plitt bought this chain from the old ABC theatre chain sometime in the 70’s. They owned the Kingsley, Florida, Center and Regency to name a few. I was projectionist at the Kingsley and would cover at the Edgewood and the others if the regular projectionist was out. The early to mid 80’s they started shuttering alot of the old houses like this one. Boy the stuff( Press books, Lobby Cards, Posters) I got out of those places before they sold them was incredible! Going back to 40’s even.
I remember when the theatre closed its doors in the mid 80s when I worked at the midway drive in which at the same time closed. We had to pull all the equipment out of there due to when eastern federal corp was closing a LOT of theatres at that time.Due to rumor,EFC was on lease.
