Opened on April 12th, 1912. Grand opening ad posted.
The Ryman is between Commerce and Broad. The various movie theaters we have discussed on Fifth Avenue were between Union and Church. This includes the Alhambra, Rex, Fifth Avenue, Strand, one of the Elites, two of the Crescents, the Dixie, the Rialto and the Crystal.
The Rex was a Crescent house. I have a newspaper clipping showing the Crescent execs standing in the entrance of the Rex.
The Rex was ten (10) seats wide and showed “C” pictures if there is such a grade. They would have a double feature (both very old) and then several worn out shorts, also from years back.
It was claimed that rats were sometimes seen in the Rex.
It cost 12¢ to get in but the mosaic on the lobby floor said 10¢.
By the way there were 4 Elite theatres in Nashville, only one is listed on C.T.
I read on another site that the Rex operated from 1920-1950.
The Rex mainly showed cowboy movies and had no restrooms.
Thanks Mike I know but I lot of these theatres date well before 1956,but any info will help.
Just let me know any theatre in Question and I will do my best with the Almanac to find them.
This theatre was located by the Alalambra in the same block as the Ryman Auditorium if I am not mistaken.
Yes I was aware of these I have posted on all but the Bordeaux, and and Old Hickory I believe,I will check them out if I havent already, I need one of your books. You forgot the 1st and 2nds Princess and my Crescent. Thanks Mike.
Nashville had a bunch of Crescent theatres; Belle Meade,Belmont,Bordeaux Drive-in,Capitol,CrescentDrive-in,Donelson,Elite,5th Ave,green Hills, inglewood,Knickerbocker,Melrose,Old Hickory,Paramount,Princess,Roxy,State,Woodbine,Woodland,Skyway Drive -in and the classy Tennessee. You are welcome.
O.K. I did say most likely. Hard to find info on these old houses my grandmother or my dad might have known but both have passed on.I will look up the Roxy again I remeber hearing about it I think that it is on C.T. there were many theatres in the downtown Nashville area over the years many before my time.
Tlsloews,According to my Almanac the Rex Theatre was not a Crescent Amusement Co. Theatre. They had the ROXY THEATRE there ,but no REX THEATRE.
This theatre most likely was built by Crescent Amusement Company.Who had there headquarters in Nashville.
Thanks Theatre Organ this theatre would have been around the corner from the Arcade a Nashville Landmark for over one hundred years.
The Tennessean newspspaper (3/31/1912) reported that F.A. Leatherman Co., located at 12 Arcade, Nashville, was to install a Wurlitzer Duplex Pianorchestra at a cost of $5,000.00. The opening date was to be the week of April 8th, 1912.
