The Astor was one of Auckland’s biggest and busiest second run “action” houses. The building was made of corrigated iron, with a brick foyer and frontage and large neon.
It opened in 1911 as the Empire Theatre, later becoming the New Empire Theatre. In the early 1940’s it was re-named Astor Theatre and underwent some re-fitting in around 1950. It closed in 1985, being demolished later that year.

I think this theatre was demolished and a church was built on it’s site
Opened as the Empire on 14 December, 1911. Renamed Astor 1940-1943. It had, according to NZ Licensing Authority, 850 seats in 1956.

Rex – only church in vicinity is now Columbus Cafe corner Burnley Tce and Dominion Road. I think the Astor was further in towards town where the car rentals are(opposite Ballyntine reserve) or even closer next to the BNZ corner of Bellwood Ave and D'Rd.
