Apollo Theatre

Originally an open air theatre that was part of F.H. Merten’s Photo-Play Theatres. Located on the corner of Jackson Avenue (today Martin Luther King Drive) and Wilkinson Avenue, this theatre opened May 27, 1911. It was closed in the mid-1950’s.

A picture post card can be found on page 111 of the Arcadia Publishing book “Jersey City”.

It is now a Salvation Army thrift shop.

Listed in the 1944 and 1956 FDYs. No seat total in the 1956 FDY, which indicates that it might be closed by this time.

I think the theatre may still stand. Check out the Salvation Army building, which gives its address as 242 Martin Luther King Drive. It looks like it could have been an old theatre. Additionally, property tax records from the Jersey City assessor’s office list the official address of this building as 242-246 MLK Drive. 246 was the address of the Apollo Theatre.
