Grove Drive-In

The Grove Drive-In opened in 1950 with a capacity for 250 cars. In August of 1986, a powerful storm hit this drive-in and destroyed the screen and caused some damage to the building. The owner decided that the cost was too high to repair the drive-in. The last movie to play here was “Jo Jo Dancer, Your Life Is Calling” with Richard Pryor.

You do a great job ferreting out the old drive in records. One of the last to close in VA was not far from this one, just down the road,North of Keysville. It was a small venue, family operation, closed about three years ago.

I should also ask if any sources have anything on the old theater in Burkeville. It was a drug store for many years and is now an insurance office. In nearby(3 miles) Crewe is an ancient downtown theater that looks to be closed for MANY years. The adjoining bdg is being demolished.Believe it was at one time a railroad hotel.

Passed by this sad sight today. The building still stands, the lot is still clear.Blackstone is a fairly sad place though, overall, with a number of closed textile-related plants.

HEY!!! Mr.Lost, yesterday,i noticed one of the doors ajar on the old theater in CREWE.Don’t know the name of it.Went inside to a super-sad sight.Roof totally collapsed.Place had a balcony with brass rail still in place.very dangerous to enter, but must see,of course. No way to “save” this place with any amount of money.

Old Nottoway Rd & The Grove Rd, Blackstone, VA 23824

The above address will map accurately to the location of the drive-in, which is visible on Goggle Earth using present day imagery.

I saw a post from The Courier Record newspaper a “Photo from the Past” on Facebook. The picture shows damage to the drive-in. In the caption, it mentions that the drive-in survived Hurrican Hazel in 1954 (90 mph winds) and that country music stars such as Roy Acuff and Hank Williams played at the drivein. It also mentions that the Crewe, Burkeville, Kenbridge, and Victoria drive-ins had closed by then (1986).

A closer address is 3297 Old Nottoway Rd, Crewe, VA.

Google Maps has updated their addresses and this places it right on the projection booth/concession stand.

Amid the overgrowth, the projection booth/concession stand still seems intact. The entrance road is still present, but nothing else of the drive-in remains.
