The Strand’s official web site says that it opened on Christmas Day, 1920. Originally seating 500 (as listed in the 1926 Film Daily Yearbook) it now seats 200. Operation of the Strand was taken over by a community-based non-profit corporation in 2013.

Recent story on Phila. TV 29: http://www.myfoxphilly.com/dpp/good_day_philadelphia/saving-hamburg%27s-strand-theater061411 It reports theater’s owner may not be able to keep theater open, concerned about payment due bank on Aug 1. A group is hoping to turn it nonprofit. Paragraph about history: The Strand has done a great job collecting memories. They have the original projector from 1920. They have ticket stubs and the original red seats. Some of the old movies can be found in the basement.
