The semi new Imax screen here is not that big. The XD screen next door seems larger and has a better curve to it. They put in the Imax screen when the new Regal Stonestown opened up a few miles away with their 4DX, Screen X and RPX screens. No leg room at the Imax at Century Daly City. They crammed in seats so close in what was a regular size screen. You can’t read the reserved seat numbers on the seats. Good stereo split surround sound with deep base in the Imax auditorium.

The Century 20 in Daly City is one of several multiplex projects designed for the Century chain by the San Diego architectural firm Fehlman LaBarre (partial list from Reed Construction Data.)

I’ve removed my earlier comment with a link to the Fehlman LaBarre web site, which used to have information about the project. The domain name was allowed to lapse and now belongs to an Asian spam site, so avoid it. Partner Mark Fehlman has retired from architecture to pursue a career as an artist, and partner Michael LaBarre has merged his practice with San Diego firm Carrier Johnson + CULTURE.

I visited the Daly City 20 back in December, 2005 for a screening of “Munich” on screen #3. And while I am not a huge fan of megaplexes, this is a beautifully designed theatre. Tickets are purchased at outside kiosks and you go up an escalator to find 10 cinemas in two wings.

The projection and sound quality (THX/SR-D) was superb on #3, even though it was a medium sized cinema. I’m sure that if it this good in here, it will be even better in the largest cinemas. Might have something to do with the fact that THX and Dolby are in San Francisco? ;)

I also believe that there are “self-serve” concessions here, although I didn’t get to visit them.

This is one of a few theaters in the Century circuit to feature DLP Digital Projection presentations (of selected features).
