The Independence Square Cinema, located near the historic Independence Square, got its name from the same. It first opened in June 20, 1975 as a four-screen cinema and features first run attractions.
The building is rather impressive with the dark red color and dark brown trim. Canvas balloon awnings over the poster cases and front doors. Colonial style lanterns are on each side of the second floor windows with a large cinema sign between the windows and above the front entrance.
In around 2008, it was renamed Pharaoh 4 Cinemas and is operated by the independent Globe Cinemas company.

This was one of my favorite theaters growing up. It was down the street from my junior high school and my mom worked across the street for several years. I spent a lot of time at the arcade that was right next door too. It opened in the early ‘70’s as a Mid-America theater. By the early '90’s, it was a dollar house and the owners weren’t keeping up with the upkeep. It had fallen into disrepair. Globe Cinemas bought the theater a few years ago and totally renovated the inside and outside. They renamed it the Pharaoh and turned it into a first run house again. It’s now a real nice theater that doesn’t draw the huge crowds the megaplex on the other side of the city does. It’s a nice moviegoing experience.

I first went to this theater in 1978 or 79. Some of the movies I saw there were Superman, Dragonslayer, Porky’s II, and the first Nightmare on Elm Street. Nice theater, there were other choices back then such as Blue Ridge Cinema East and Independence I & II. My best memory is going to see Porky’s II the week before I went to Basic Training..it was a hot July weeknight, just me and my friends trying to think of something to do. Fond memories.
