The Garneau Theatre opened its doors on October 24, 1940 with Luise Rainer in “The Great Waltz” along with an unnamed cartoon and an unnamed crime short.
This theatre has had some close calls, but it’s good to see it’s still open. I’ve attended a couple films there and it’s a nice, old-school venue.
This theatre was originally operated by the Famous Players Canadian Corporation right up to the late 90’s.
October 24th, 1940 grand opening ad has been uploaded in the photo section.
The Garneau Theatre is alive and well and is now home to the Metro Cinema Society. The current seating capacity is 527 seats.
