The 78 Drive-In was opened on October 30, 1948 with John Payne in “Wake Up and Dream”. This drive-in was owned by R.M. Kennedy and had space for 300 cars. It was twinned in 1981 and the car capacity increased to 500. It was operated by Cobb Theatres. It was closed around the late-1980’s or early-1990’s.

It was at the northwest corner of Old Birmingham Highway and Cordova Cut-off Road.

The above address will map to the location of the drive-in, which is still visible using Google Earth.
My father is from Jasper, he was born in 1936 & I know he lived there until be joined the Air Force in 1955. What a cool piece of history. He lives 700 + miles from me but I’m going to get this printed out & sent to him. I’m sure it’ll bring back great memories!! 😉
Why the name 78?
The theatre opened October 30, 1948 with John Payne and June Haver in “Wake Up and Dream.” Built for $40,000 by John M. Miller and Garve Ivey, it was located on Highway 78 just two miles from the city limits of Jasper.
The Pathway Was Partially Visible Today. But It Has Been Like That Since The 1990’s As Late As 1998. The 78 Twin I Believe Closed Sometime In Either In The Late 1980’s Or The Early 1990’s, That’s My Best Guess.
