Playhouse Theater

The Playhouse Theater was built around 1973. The former theater has been renovated and is now primarily a meeting and classroom facility for Penn State. It is known as the Penn State Altoona’s Downtown Conference Center.

The building also retained its film capabilities and hosts the Penn State Altoona Film Series, which provides free showings of classic films each Sunday night to a community and student audience. The Playhouse Theater was originally a twin screen theatre, but now operates only one screen.

The conference center now has one screen, in what was the upstairs theater. At the Playhouse, one would enter at street level, pass a common concession counter, and then go either downstairs or upstairs to the desired theater (this was long before the days of ADA requirements, of course; no elevator either way!).

The downstairs theater was broken into two or three classrooms, so as Wannagitawt said, only the upstairs screen is still in use.
