A chronology of Anchorage’s 70mm presentations history has recently been published. The University 6 gets some mentions in the piece.
This opened on November 27th, 1985, and closed on June 30th, 2000. It was owned by Festival Enterprises, Mann Theatres, Act III and Regal Cinemas. Grand opening ad posted. The opening of this theatre ended the first-run monopoly in the area.
June 7 1990 and thse films are playing there: “BACK TO THE FUTURE III” .“BIRD ON A WIRE”.“ANOTHER 48 HOURS”,“TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES” “THE GUARDIAN and "CRAZY PEOPLE” the last two were a double feature, “BIRD ON A WIRE” and “BACK TO THE FUTURE III” were shown on two screens, don’t understand the need to do that for “BIRD ON A WIRE” a very lousy movie. They were selling “DICK TRACY” ticket T-Shirts to see “DICK TRACY” coming soon to the Valler River 6 theatres.
The University Center opened in 1972, anchored by Safeway on the North end and Pay-n-Save on the South end, it was expanded in the 80s, with the University Cinema added to the south end in the mid 80’s.
As far as I know the former theater space is now used by University of Alaska Anchorage for classrooms.
Mea culpa.
I think early 80s is relatively new given that most of our discussions concern theaters built in the first half of the twentieth century.
The photo that I saw implied that University Center was an alternate name. As always, I do not argue infallibility.
