Cool info and memory about Eleanor, Janis E.
I always remember this theater as where I saw Star Wars in 1977. Also I stood in a very long line in 1980 to see The Empire Strikes Back on opening night. When I saw Tim Burton’s Batman a band played the 60’s theme song before the film.

November 9th, 1984 grand opening ad as a quad in photo section. The 3rd screen opened a week earlier.
Miss that big screen at the Roosevelt. Saw such event movies as KING KONG, STAR WARS, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS, GREASE, SUPERMAN, ROCKY II, THE EMPIRE STRIKES BACK, SUPERMAN II, STAR TREK II, INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM, INDIANA JONES AND THE LAST CRUSADE, BATMAN and several others on that screen. It just isn’t the same.
This opened on July 29th, 1949. Grand opening ad in photo section. Google Maps reviews are now giving this place better reviews since they did some updates on the theatre.
What crying shame to split up this theatre.

Like anything old, this theatre HAS seen better days, and has had alterations to keep it going, and it had odd odors at times… BUT look directly across the road and you will see the historic home of FDR, which many people visit every year, including the gravesite of Franklin and Eleanor who are buried in the Rose garden there… Yes, this theatre HAS seen better days,and I’m sorry if it sounds like a commercial but>>> for less than you pay at newer theatres, you get to see a movie AND sit in a building that has an interesting History. Ok, so maybe it’s not the main reason you go to a movie, but at least give THIS a thought the next time you go there>>> THE Roosevelts actually used to go here to see movies… sitting in a glassed in room on the second floor. I know because I grew up in this town, as did my parents before me. In the l950’s my parents took me there when I was a child and Eleanor still used to go there from time to time.
This was once a great theatre run with pride by the original owners. Originally a 500+ seat single screener with two glass enclosed “cry room” balcony seating areas upstairs on either side of the projection booth. The main auditorium also had a sizeable stage, and two giant brass American Eagles that resided on the side walls. Back in the day, this theatre had the exclusive, showcase county engagement for Star Wars, which they ran for almost one full year, only to be replaced by an exclusive on Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind, which also ran for almost a full year. Those were the days!
Three additional screens were later added on by the owners to make a 4-plex, but without touching the original auditorium. It was only after they sold the Roosevelt that the new owner chopped up the main house, added on the “theatre” in the cafe space, and ran it to the ground. What was once the second largest theatre space (running parallel to the original auditorium) is now considered their main house. The previous comments are on point – this place is now a dump.
This theater is a complete mess. Screen 1,2,3 are where the original there was. A very bad split of what was years ago a great place to see a movie. Screen 4,5,6 are not bad, these screen were new construction added in the 80’s when just a single screen could not compete with the multpex at the Galleria Mall. Screen 7 is the absolute worse place to see a movie. The area was originally a cafe that the new owners converted to another theater. Very small, very tight seats and if you stand up your shadow shows on a tv sized screen.
The theater is usually dirty and has that mildew odor. Even with cheaper tickets that the Regal at the mall the last place in the Poughkeepsie area that I would go to see a movie.
The best thing they could do with this theater is tear it down and make a parking lot.
