First, the screen is still standing and easily seen when driving by! @rgsears.
Also, (raymondgordonsears) – I am researching this theater for my blog, and it seems you might be able to help with your knowledge and work experience with Budco.
I’m trying to find the actual year this closed: I know it was definitely still open 1980, but closed in 1987 (because AMC was planning on building on the site).
Anyone have this information?
Drove by last week and it looks like the screen is GONE!
This Drive-In was operated by Budco and was still in operation in 1985,
Went here sometime in the mid-70s just as the toll on the Tacony-Palmyra bridge was changing. It was a nickel going over from Philly and a dime on the way back after the show. The weird things you remember.
Uploaded aerial from 1967. Not there in 1965 or earlier views. So it could not have opened up in late 1950’s.
Approx. location for this drive-in was 2323 New Jersey 73. Theatre is actually next to it.
Thats a nice dream rg!
Yes,that is a nice screen, but it will most likely never open,
Was just by the old D-I today. Screen is in good condition. Build a projection booth, snack bar and a box office and start showing movies. (Don’t forget to cut down thw trees) rg
Here is a January 2011 photo of the screen. Trees are getting in the way…
No, this one’s where Route 73 and US 130 intersect, where Route 90 (from the Betsy Ross Bridge) ends.
Is this on Admiral Wilson boulevard? My Jersey geography is a little rusty now, although I used to take the NJ Transit bus from AC to Philly all the time. That went down 73, I think.
Now that ballroom is some kind of Christian church. The screen next door still stands.
Across the street are piles of dirt and concrete from what used to be the Mart and the UA. Nothing seems to be happening there.
The old drive-in property still sets there empty, alongside a former department store site, which has been used as a ballroom. Those two sites may be redeveloped into new retail space.
This was operated by Budco in the late ‘60s/early '70s, maybe later. Budco must have still owned the real estate when they were acquired by AMC because years later there was a “for sale” sign on the property showing AMC as a contact.
