Regal Theatre

This was an African-American theatre. It was originally opened as the Palace Theatre prior to 1921. By 1933 it had been renamed Regal Theatre.

The Regal Theatre was operated from 1935-1945 by Lichtman Theatres, and from 1950-1955 by Durkee Theatres. It was closed in 1955.

As far as I can tell it has become a hardware store. An unfortunate fate if I do say so.

My father managed the Regal Theater in the late 50s when Church St was still booming. I spent many hours in this theater, and saw many double features. Great memories.

I saw an ad in a Norfolk newspaper for the Regal that said it was previously the Palace.

I remember watching The Dirty Dozen at the Regal & that was in 1967.
