The Star Theatre was operating as an African-American theatre by 1930. In 1940 it was remodeled to the plans of architect Alfred M. Lublin and was renamed Gem Theatre. The theatre was operated by Lichtman Theatres. It was located across the street and a half block from the Regal Theatre. The Gem Theatre closed in the late-1950’s and has since been demolished.

Prior to being remodeled in 1940, this house was called the Star Theatre. Plans for the remodeling were by architect Alfred M. Lublin. Eric Ledell Smith’s book African American Theater Buildings says that the Star was an African American house at least as early as 1930.
