I lived in Norfolk during the 70s.. and saw “Star Wars” at this theatre. It wasn’t a four; it opened as a six-screen multiplex, and was named the Circle 6. At the time, it did big business. It was one of the “old style” early AMC houses, really just 6 narrow shoeboxes. People who cared about such things (few as they were) hated seeing a movie there. The other 542,000 packed the place.I assume the Military Circle Mall ain’t what it used to be back then?

THEGREEV, Military Circle Mall is now called The Gallery At Military Circle. They spent $36 Million on renovation, they added a new Sears, did a major renovation of the existing Hecht’s store (I’d guess it’s now a Macy’s), redeveloped the attached 208 room Doubletree Hotel and a new 699-seat food court. It continues to have a J C Penny and 9 retail out-parcels, 3 office buildings and 6,500 parking spaces. They also added a Cinemark 18!

While stationed in the area ‘88-'92, I was a member of the AMC Movie Watcher Club. I still have the card. According to the points statements and ticket stubs I still have, I watched the following at the Circle 4;

Cook, Thief, Wife and Lover at 1:45 on Sat. 4/28/90 ($4)
Presumed Innocent at 4:15 on Fri. 9/7/90 ($3.50)
Postcards From the Edge at 7:15 on Sun. 9/16/09 ($5.50)
Cadence at 8:15 on Tues. 2/26/91 ($5.50)
Silence of the Lambs at 5:45 on Mon. ¾/91 ($3.50 [$3.24 admission, $0.26 Tax, 8%, ouch!])
and maybe Prince of Tides at 8pm on Wed. 2/5/92 ($3.50 [$3.24 admission, $0.26 Tax, 8%, ouch!])

Actually Circle 6 was inside the mall. This theater opened years later. And was terrible. This was the era where multiplexes used a one size fits all screen, no matter if the movie was in 1.85 or 2.35. I saw APOCALYPSE NOW there and both sides of the image were lopped off. I remember also seeing REDS there. AMC theaters in this period were the worst—-it recalls Pauline Kael’s response when asked what she thought of multiplexes. She replied “It’s like going to a movie in a latrine.”
