- Sep 18, 2012 — Shaquille O'Neal is the now the owner of the Cityplex 12
- Sep 22, 2008 — Newark gets cash to save ailing movie theater
Not related to the All Jersey multiplex, this theatre is the only theater left in Newark showing movies, and the only theater in the area that’s now independently run after originally owned by Sony/Loews, which would run the nearby theater in Elizabeth. It was originally a 6-screen theatre with 1,604-seats, and opened on April 2, 1993 as the Loews Newark.
In 2012, this movie theatre became the Cityplex 12. The largest screen in the revamped theatre will be called the Shaq-EX Premium Theatre Experience with a 43-foot screen and 3D projection. All auditoriums have stadium seating, and state of the art digital projection and surround sound.

I think this officiaally opened this weekend. (I heard something about it on 1010-Wins radio.)

The Newark CityPlex 12 was designed by the Philadelphia architectural firm JKR Partners, which was formerly known as JKRoller Architects. There are six photos of this rather stark, modern cinema on the firm’s web site.
Looks like there have been a rash of breakins at this place…

Linkrot repair: JKR Partners have renamed themselves JKRP Architects, and have reconfigured their web site. Four photos of the Cityplex remain on display at this link.
Two people shot last night steps from this theater…

Grand opening ad posted. It opened as Loews Newark.
A better grand opening ad now in the photos section and please update when the theatre opened orginally with 6 screens (4 254 seat screens and 2 294 seat screens). Unfortunately the theatre is not reserved seating, don’t know the total seat count with the additional screens
