Closed as a subrun discount house showing 99 cent films on November 18, 1993 virtually at the end of its 20-year lease.
November 13th, 1974 grand opening ad in photo section.
A remember reading somewhere that General Cinema was the 5th. largest soft drink beverage concern in the U.S.
This Gold Circle was still showing films after 1977 because I saw several shows there.
Must have been mid to late 70’s cause there are no GCC theatres there in 1974.
Actually the Western Hills Gold Circle Cinema was across the street from the Western Woods Plaza, which housed it’s own theater.
This was one of the few screens that General Cinema operated in Cincinnati. In the ‘70’s, there were three chains in the city: Mid-States Theatres (which went through multiple acquisitions by USA Cinemas and then Loews), National Amusements (who eventually bought out all the Loews screens in the '90’s), and General Cinema. GC had only two locations I can recall from childhood: the Gold Circle Twin, and the Western Woods Plaza in Western Hills. The Western Hills location closed by the '80’s, and I don’t know if in its final days the Gold Circle was still operated by GC.
