First mentioned as Star Theatre in a classified ad as someone lost something in a classified ad on December 17th, 1911.
Newspaper listings for the Kansas theatre ended in 1941. Must assume that it closed in 1941.
The Star Theatre was listed at 221 E. Douglas in the 1914-1915 American Motion Picture Directory. The August 12 issue of The Western Contractor that same year said that a contract had been let for tile work in the Star Theatre building in Wichita, but it didn’t say if the building itself was new or if the theater was just getting an improvement. Either way, the place was definitely in operation by late 1914.
Opened on November 23rd, 1921. Grand opening ad posted.
Here is a story about the C.C. McCollister family, who worked, owned or managed Wichita theaters including the Star and Kansas.
July 12, 1931 image of the Kansas Theater open in defiance of Wichita’s blue laws. http://cdm15942.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/singleitem/collection/p15942coll10/id/56
The Wichita-Sedgwick County Historical Museum posted a photo of the Kansas Theatre.
Here is a before and after picture of the Kansas Theater
Kewpie, The Kansas Theater was at 221 E. Douglas.
Mike, The Pawnee 4 Cinemas was in the Pawnee Plaza Shopping Center on the SE corner of Pawnee and Broadway. The Pawnee 4 Cinemas closed in 2000. Wal-Mart built a store in the mall in 1987. In 2004 the mall was torn down to make way for a Wal-Mart Supercenter
No Kansas Theatre listed in the May 15 1974 newspaper. You guys in Wichita, where were the PAWNEE 4 cinemas i see in the paper?
Seymour,
I have to see if anything of the theater remains. Since it was remodeled so much I doubt it but I will check.
Keith: Since the building still stands, is there anything left of the theatre auditorium?
Here is a great web site with lots of history on Kansas theatres,

The Kansas Theatre began as the Star Theater. It was renamed after a contest in 1921. Building after some remodeling is still standing but is empty.
Most likely the old Star Nickelodeon was renamed Kansas Theatre in 1921, as the Star photo looks as if it dates much further back than the 1920’s. Here are vintage images of the Kansas Theatre,
