Opened June 9th, 1939. Saugus Drive-In opening 08 Jun 1939, Thu The Daily Item (Lynn, Massachusetts) Newspapers.com
A note in the May 19, 1943 issue of The Exhibitor reported that the Saugus had opened “for its fifth season.” Which would put its opening in 1939. Then it closed its gate “for the duration” weeks later following an order prohibiting pleasure driving, per the June 9 issue.
The sign for this place stayed in place for years after it closed (seems to be the way for most drive in closings.) Used to see the sign along Route 1 entrance seemed to be direct off the highway. Must have been a real mess when cars were waiting to get in and when the place emptied out.
The 1978 aerial shows the ramps and outline, but the screen and concession stand are gone. Apparently, it was demolished well before the property had new construction.

Circuit City has been defunct for several years; has another store replaced it at this site?

The above address will map accurately to the location of the drive-in, which is now occupied by a shopping center anchored by Marshals.

I remember this drive in from my childhood, growing up in Melrose. It was one of the few in Mass that was opened year round. They rented out heaters that did little to keep you warm. We always brought warm blankets to wrap up in. Always fun and makes for great memories.
Had capacity for 400 cars.
