Scala Cinema

The Scala Theatre opened on 3rd March 1914. It was the first cinema to be built by Sol Levy who went on to build and operate over sixteen cinemas in major cities across the UK.

The exterior facade was highly decorated and was covered in glazed terra-cotta. Inside the auditorium seating was provided for 650 in the stalls and 150 in the balcony.

The cinema was independently operated throughout its life and was sold in May 1958 with plans to demolish for a new ring-road. It was closed on 4th June 1960 with Jennifer West in "Teenage Lovers"(Too Soon to Love) and Coleen Grey in "The Leach Woman".

After demolition a new cinema named the Scala Superama was built close-by on the new ring-road(Smallbrook Queensway).

The glazed terracotta was supplied by the famous Gibbs and Canning Ltd. firm of Tamworth, Staffordshire.
