The Rockland Drive-In closed on September 13, 1987 with “He’s My Girl” and “Tootsie”.
I think the theater actually closed in the early 1990s. It was a really fun place to go see a movie with a giant screen. Amazingly the screen was in good shape right until the time they knocked it down
Wow, bummer, what a loss. I used to live around that area. :(
According to the local newspaper, the screen was demolished yesterday. A five story office building will go going up on the site.
They Updated the Google Street view to 2018 and you can actually go on to the property now past the screen!
Opened with “Not as a stranger” and “Lone gun”.
Property is now a “Park and Ride” so people can catch the bus. Screen still in good shape, but half the property is overgrown. Concession stand/projection booth long gone, but restoration is possible.
As an aside, the Google street view from 2016 shows the driver of a pickup on the north lane using his hand to show his disapproval of being on Google street view.
This opened on September 8th, 1955. Grand opening ad in photo section,
John and Drew Eberson architectural sketch circa 1955 in photos.
Above address is incorrect. This is several blocks south. Approx. address for this drive-in was 19 New York 59. The huge screen is still up. Concession foundation is still there as are all the ramps.
still empty
Is all the property still empty? Why dosen’t someone reopen this?
HAHA….we used to park at Pathmark where we could see the screen For Free…anyone with memories of this place please write .ph
I rode by this Drive-In last Sunday-the screen and marquee are still standing. I want to go take pictures soon!
There is a picture of this drive-in marquee with looming screen in the new issue of Weird NJ.
Was also known as the Route 59 Drive-In from the “Abandoned but not Forgotten” website.
I have a vague memory of my parents taking me here when I was quite young. I believe the film was “The Heartbreak Kid,” which had Charles Grodin and Cybil Shepherd. I would have been six years old. I think maybe they couldn’t get a babysitter, so they threw me in the back seat of the car. One of the few times I went to a drive-in as a kid.
