https://www.genealogybank.com/, they have Newark and Jersey City papers up to 1991
rivest266 which newspaper did you find the grand opening ad, I was looking for a long time, I can’t get access to the Newark Star Ledger.
The All-Jersey Multiplex opened on November 22nd, 1991. Grand opening ad posted.
With the closing of the edgewater theater, there are no more NA/Showcase cinemas left in North Jersey.
Looks like the built some small gas storage towers on the southwest corner and the rest is all storage containers. A regular industrial looking area. You would never know a movie theatre or drive in ever existed.
Is there anything on the site now?
Your Welcome.
It is markp. thanks
This is the theatre your thinking about. Also the Amboys Multiplex opened in 1979 and closed in 2005.
How many multiplexes did National Amusments open on drive in site and close in less then 20 year. Besides this I can name the Whitestone Multiplex in the Bronx, the Atco multiplex in South Jersey and there is one more in North Jersey off the New Jersey turnpike.
On my way into the city yesterday on the bus, for the first time in 3 months, the theatre is now nothing but a very small pile of rubble. And yes the Multiplex sign by the turnpike is still there as is the marquee by rte 1. A For Sale sign hangs from it.
Did they tear this down and leave the sign? I could swear I saw the sign the other day driving up the NJTP in Newark.
All Jersey Multiplex Cinemas was demolished the week of March 30th, 2014.
On my way to New York City this morning just after sunrise, the Turnpike was void of any traffic so I slowed to look at this theatre. It appears from the road that all of the roof top air condition units have been stripped of useable parts/copper, etc. All panels are removed and you can clearly see empty spaces within the units. No doubt rain water must pour in during storms. There is also a banner on the building “For Sale”
Yes. It was the sire of the old Newark Drive-In
Was this on the sight of the old Newark Drive -In?
Demolished???? What kind of building is demolished and its there intact for you to see? LIE… The building is NOT demolished… Someone prove I’m wrong.
I agree movie534. They should probably label them as Superfund sites.
This now closed and rotting hulk, along with its sister companion, the also closed and rotting Amboys Multiplex in Sayreville, N.J. should be demolished. It is a haven for graffitti taggers.
I drive by this theater nightly, the lights always turn on after dark, and the Marquee is now tagged with graffiti along with some of the doors on the building itself.
The theatre is closed, but not demolished. As you drive by Newark airport the theatre building is still clearly visible from the Turnpike.
