Francis Theatre

The Francis Theatre was built to replace an earlier Francis Theatre just along the street which closed in 1941. This Francis Theatre was opened on November 8, 1941, and closed in 1984. The closed theatre was demolished when an earthquake in the area in spring of 1993 spelled the end for this old movie house.

Due to flaws in the structural integrity of the building, the Francis Theatre was demolished. It is currently a park.

The Arcadia Publishing Company book “Newberg,” by Tom Fuller and Christy Van Heukelem says that the Francis Theatre opened on November 8, 1941, and closed in 1984. The theater was located in a former meat packing plant that had been remodeled. The earthquake that led to the building’s demolition occurred in 1993. The theater was named for its owner, Ted Francis.

There is currently a Google Books preview of the book available.

The Francis was already closed at the time of the 1993 spring break earthquake.
