Went to a screening of “Apollo 18” yestereday. Having not been in this cinema for some time, I was pleased to see that been fixed up a little. They seem to continue to draw good crowds for their Indian films. There seems to be a large Indian population in the area. Much of the staff is Indian. They have cleaned the place up. Still a lot of work remains to be done to bring it up to level of the nearby Mann Maple Grove 10 (also a discount cinema). Interesting right behind this cinema, is the old GCC Brookdale 3 or 4. The building is still there. Across the street is a Kohl’s department store which stands on the site of the ABC Brookdale, one of the last single screen houses built in the Twin Cities. So the area in the early ‘80s really was a “theatre district”. The major nearby mall, Brookdale, has been razed. It was the second major Mall in Minnesota built in 1962.

I loved this theater when I was younger. I saw “Home Alone” here in 1990 as a child, as well as many other films. The theater is now one of the last remaining businesses within the strip center in which it sits. It is very sad to see this decline. I will have to go back at some point and see a film there again and relive my youth.

Back in the 1980’s they’d have “Midnight Madness” on the weekends with special runs of Horror movie fare at Midnight. I got to see The Terminator, Nightmare on Elm Street, and The Hitcher all there at Midnight on Saturdays.

I also remember before and between shows, instead of commerials or loud cruddy music in mexaplex’s today, they had this lava lamp “stuff” doing across the screens on a loop. Very 1960’s. I miss the flowing “paint” as I called it.

Brookdale 8 Cinemas is no longer a discount theater. Now it is with new management MN Cinema Inc. and is showing intermediate run. The place looks clean and improved sound system (DTS). Mainly this is the place not only for American movies they are showing lot of Asian (Bollywood) movies.

I feel these are the decent theaters for that price.

The last time I was there, about 18 months ago, it didn’t smell. But it is very run down. I would expect it to close at any time.

Don’t go. Smells like urine and they refused to refund my money. It’s a dump and a ripoff and should be condemned.
