Picture Show at Alamonte Springs

This theatre was opened December 20, 1974 by AMC. With it’s shot gun style auditoriums, it had large seating capacities, 300 or more, in 4 of the 6 auditoriums, with seats just legs lengths out of reach of the screens. The other 2 auditoriums seated under 200 each. The theatre was operated up until 1999 by AMC when they abandoned it for a bigger deal with the new and upcoming Altamonte Mall.

Since AMC’s departure from the building on December 31, 1999, 3 other independent operators have attempted at running the cinema against its battle start sister, the AMC Altamonte Mall 18 less than a quarter mile up the road. One of those, Sunstar Theatres began operation on April 9, 2002.

Picture Show Entertainment is the residing operator running the establishment as a second run family affordable cinema. Picture Show opened the cinema on February 15, 2005 and has since grown very well over the few years they have been in operation. Picture Show put some very nice renovations into the theatre with new carpet, wall paper, and painting, and even replaced some of the old AMC chairs with used but good condition chairs. They have also removed a few rows of seating for the better viewing pleasure of the audience. It was closed on January 30, 2025.

I remember when this was the Interstate 6 theater. My friends and I wanted to see an R rated movie but we were only 16. So we bought tickets for King Pin and sneaked into the R rated movie where we were promptly caught and thrown out. The upside was we got our money back.

The little mall this theater is in has undergone some major transformation. In the early 1990’s there was a Pharacare Drugstore were we bought candy to sneak in and tame but adult novelty store across the hall from the theater. Looking back on it I was quite the little troublemaker.

Closed permanently on January 30, 2025 as one of the last true multiplexes operating on a sub-run, discount dollar house policy citing end of a 20-year leasing agreement. How hard was it to get a “second run” theatrical film in 2025? They closed with Despicable Me 4 (from July 3, 2024), Beetlejuice, Beetlejuice (September 2, 2024), Wild Robot (September 27, 2024), Venom: The Last Dance (October 25, 2024), and the only recent title of the lot, Kraven, the Hunter (December 13, 2024). We salute you, Picture Show at Alamonte Springs.
