Neptune City Theatre

The Neptune City Theatre was located off of Route 35, part of the Neptune City Shopping Center in Neptune, NJ. It was on the corner of Union Street and 3rd Avenue. It was opened July 4, 1962 with James Stewart in “Mr. Hobbs Takes a Vacation”. It was operated by Associated Independent Theatres Inc. It was taken over by Walter Reade Theatres on September 19, 1968.

In its later days it was a grindhouse that churned out low budget horror and also second run films. At that point the neighborhood had turned from middle class to lower class. The Neptune City Theatre was closed on May 31, 1985 with Eddie Murphy in “Beverley Hills Cop”.

It is now in use as the Underground Gym and a community center.
