Boxoffice, Oct. 17, 1966: “Black Hills Amusement Co. has taken over operation of the State Theatre and Sioux Drive-In at Rapid City. The State had been operated by John George and the Sioux had been operated by his son Tom.”

Boxoffice, Oct. 31, 1977: “The State Theatre, Rapid City, and the Gem Theatre, Riverton, Wyo., have been reopened by Commonwealth and both theatres will be operating on a first-run basis.”

The site is now a bank(The National Bank) and a carpark.

Grand opening was August 1, 1930 with the film, “The Big Fight.” On February 12, 1978, the State switched to Hispanic films and advertising was discontinued. It likely closed in 1978. In 1987, it became “The Rush,” a nightclub.

A 1956 Boxoffice item mentions that a Mr. Vernon Lawson had managed the State Theatre in Rapid City since 1935, so the house was at least that old.

this theater was burned down in 1996 in a fire, it was a club for a while called the rush that punk bands played at even d.o.a played here in the 90s
