The Empress Theatre opened on March 18, 1915 with Mary Pickford in “Such a Little Queen”. It had seating for nearly 1,000, with the balcony having 330 seats. It was refurbished and reopened on January 5, 1934 screening El Brendel in “Olsen’s Big Moment”. It was closed on April 13, 1977 with Barbara Harris in “Freaky Friday”. The building became a beauty salon. In 2016 it was a health food store and café. By 2022 it was an antiques shop.

The NRHP registration form for the Fremont Historic Commercial District says that the Empress Theatre was built in 1913 as a vaudeville and moving picture house.
Given the name and the timing, there’s a high probability that this theater was built for the Sullivan & Considine circuit.

I thought I’d add an update regarding the Empress Theater. My husband and I are the new owners of the Harvest Health and Coffee which is currently in the Empress Theater you see in the picture above. We have renamed the health store from Harvest Health and Coffee to honor the old Empress Theater to the Empress Health and more. We are also refurbishing the theater sign and adding new lights. So exciting and we just love being in the old theater, even the balcony is still there!
We just took over the Empress Building and going to keep it historical with the movie theater theme. We sell handmade and vintage candies, popcorn, sodas and much more.
