Hard to find this one. Park Place West is a small street next to Curley’s Diner, across from Columbus Park and it’s only 200 feet long at most. Definitely older buildings. The closest address is 78 and the diner is 62. There’s a spot between the diner and buildings for parking that I assume was the theater.
This theatre was still standing 5 years ago when I photographed it. It appears that it was a Spanish bar. See the photo at http://www.cinematour.com/tour.php?db=us&id=16943
Nope. Did not see this building.
That is the building, as shown by Roger Katz above. In the 50’s and 60’s I remember it being a car repair shop. I believe it was very old, perhaps being built at the beginning of the century. The year might have been engraved on the front of the building originally. It was turned into a movie theater in the 70’s, but it was just a flat floor with folding chairs as I recall. Showed adult films for awhile. It then became a series of different clubs until it was demolished. I’d hardly call it a theater. But it did show movies, so I’m glad to finally see it listed here, if only to complete the history for Stamford.
The building was demolished about 4 years ago and the site was turned into a surface parking lot. At the end of its theatrical life, it was an ‘adult’ theater.
This opened as the Art Ciné showing adult movies on June 29th, 1977, and closed on September 29th, 1983. It reopened with two screens on June 29th, 1984, as a art cinema. Ads posted.
