Currently being refurbished – Due to be reopened later this year as a single cinema screen luxurious cinema with cocktail bar and luxury seating!
Was due to be auctioned off on 5.11.15 but according to reports appeared to be unsold as of April 2016. Maybe the hefty €1.75 million price tag has put developers off! Pictures of how it looks inside these days are at: http://www.dailyedge.ie/rathmines-stella-cinema-2682126-Mar2016/
Hi what would be the chance of getting a list of all movies played at the Stella in a certain year – is there a historian place I could go to in Dublin for that?
Very interesting movie on the Irish times website today about the inside of the cinema and how it is fairing 12 years after closing down. The interior ( original 1923 ceiling is phenomenal – Please please please dont let this be demolished – the original interior decor of the cinema is intact and is wonderful http://www.irishtimes.com/culture/heritage/selling-the-stella-behind-doors-of-an-old-dublin-institution-1.2616085
still nothing happening there
Still empty.
Remains shut, no signs of any activity either demolition or any preparations for demolition.
Permission for demolition of the Stella Cinema and for the new apartments has been granted.
There is a delay in relation to the decision and this case is now due to be decided by the Planning Appeal Board by 15-07-2009.
A Planning Appeal has now been made to the Irish National Planning Board for the demolishion of the existing structure, and to erect a mixed development, comprising 4 apartments, retail, fitness centre and all ancillary site works. The case reference is: PL29S.232399
This case is due to be decided by 20-05-2009
It remains closed, now with more dust in evidence.
According to media reports, some locals are objecting to plans to build a four story block in place of the Stella Cinema. They claim that they need measures to deal with alleged asbestos in the roof structure of the former cinema during any demolition exercise. The replacement building would provide apartments upstairs.
Still closed, more dust but no signs of activity of any sort. A no trespassing sign in the porch.
Here is a May 2008 article from the Irish Times site:

That’s too bad. It looks like it was a nice little neighborhood theater.
Planning permission has been applied for to demolish the Stella, and replace it with apartments and some retail units. I intend to contact the developers in order to possibly photograph the interiors before this happens.
Passed it again last week, it remains closed with no signs of development.
Remains closed with no signs of activity.
