J.J. Gieg provided the architectural plans for the New Ariel Theatre for operator Joseph Welte. It launched on November 17, 1914 replacing the original Ariel Theatre a block away at 173 High Street.
This Microsoft Word document has a list of Buffalo’s early nickelodeons. The original Ariel Theatre that the New Ariel replaced was right down the block at 173-175 High Street from 1910 to 1914. It, too, has been demolished.
The New Ariel must have opened in late 1914. The January 2, 1915, issue of Motography had this announcement of the opening:
From google street view it looks like it was on the corner of Maple and High St. On the side of Maple that 185 High St should be on is a parking lot and an empty lot. On the other is another empty lot and High Street Deli (at 195 High St). I called the deli and the woman there said she’s lived there for years and there hasn’t been a cinema building around them for a long time and their building wasn’t ever one (only building in the area that looks like it could have been a theatre). Looks like it’s either the empty lot or the parking lot (probably the former since it’s on the odd numbered side of the street) and has been demolished. It’s listed as demolished on CinemaTour.com as well.
If the Google view is showing the correct address, the theater is gone. Perhaps someone local can confirm this.
