The 488-seat Walnut Theatre was opened on January 28, 1925 with Rin Tin Tin in “Where the North Begins”. On January 22, 1937 the levee broke, flooding the town and the theatre which was closed for seven months for renovations. It was given an Art Deco style makeover and reopened on July 16, 1937 with Walter Brennan in “Affairs of Cappy Ricks”.
It was renovated in 1987 after being closed for some time. One newspaper article a few years ago called this single screen first run house "one of a dying breed".
It was closed in summer of 2009. In February 2023 it was announced that the theatre had been taken over by new owners and that it would be restored to become a community based performing arts theatre, with a 2025 planned opening.

Once known as Walnut Cinema.
The Walnut Cinema closed for a whole year for renovation and remodeling after the November 30, 1987 showing of “Can’t Buy Me Love”. It was originally planned to be reopened by the Spring of 1988 but never happened. Instead, it remained dark until April 14, 1989, reopening with “Rain Man”.
The Walnut Theatre originally housed 488 seats when it opened in 1925 by J.B, Weddle, but following the broken levee in 1937, the renovation downgraded its seating capacity to 380 seats where it remained for decades. As of 1989, the Walnut housed 298 seats.
