Showman’s Trade Review, July 9, 1949: “Opening in Dallas last week were two drive-in theatres. The Hi-Vue, located at 5525 S. Beckley, owned by Tom Moran, Phil Isley and M. J. Konemann, to be managed by Mr. and Mrs. Konemann. The house accommodates 550 cars and is modernly equipped throughout.”

The Hi-Vue theater movie screen was blown over by a strong wind in the early 70’s I am guessing. The southern edge of the Hi-Vue ran along the back yards of houses on the north side of Burrell Dr. During my childhood of the 1960’s, my friend’s backyard faced the Hi-Vue theater. My brothers , friend, and I would sit on a shed in their back yard and watch the HiVue movie. The entrance to the HiVue from the I35 service road is north of what is now the Linfield Inn, formerly the Holiday Inn(I think:). Thank you for hosting this HiVue listing.

The grand opening ad is flipped so South is up, not the normal way. It shows Cleburne to the NE, it’s actually SW of Dallas. The ad also shows the screen oriented towards Laurelland Dr. And your favorite website also shows the drive-in right where I mentioned it, which is pretty darn close to the 5525 block of S. R.L. Thornton Freeway. Which is I-35 or Hwy 77.

The map link above is wrong, it points to the 3700 block or so, since Beckley was absorbed by the new freeway, there would be no 5525 Beckley any longer.

The old drive in was pretty much in the intersection of Margarita Dr and Los Cabos Dr.

Don is correct also as to the address because when the Hi Vue was built, I35E wasn’t there, and it was on Beckley. I35E wiped out that part of Beckley.

The Hi Vue was on the west side of South 35E right around Laureland Rd. (south of Loop 12). I’ve seen the address on another site listed as:
Hi-Vue Drive-In
5601 South R.L. Thornton Expressway
Dallas, TX 75228 (75228 is wrong – I lived very near there in zip 75232)
