Grand opening ad: Cineplex Odeon Waverly Place Cinemas opening Fri, Sep 16, 1988 – 81 · The News and Observer (Raleigh, North Carolina) · Newspapers.com
The gym didn’t last very long and the building remained empty until September 2015 when Cobb Theaters renovated the space and put in a Cinebistro. The entire Waverly shopping center was remodeled around this same time and is now thriving. http://cinebistro.com/waverly/
A lot of Disney films did BIG business here.
From THE RESCUERS DOWN UNDER, ALADDIN, THE LION KING,
BEAUTY AND THE BEAST, TOY STORY 1 AND TOY STORY 2.
THEATRE HISTORY:
1988-1995 Cineplex Odeon Corporation
1995-2001 Carmike Cinemas
Closed in 2001 when the building was converted into a Gold’s Gym. I have the original ads for the September 16,1988 grand opening of this theatre.
I saw HOME ALONE here at the Waverly Place Cinemas in December of 1990 with the lines that were snaked around the front of the cinema all the way to the back of the shopping center. So many crowds coming to this,it had to be shown on 2 screens. But it did BIG business!
I managed this theater for Carmike from January 1994 to December 1996. We used to call it the “Purple Palace of Love” due to the excessive use of purple in the decor – seats, counters, carpet, etc. The place used to be packed, but the auditoriums were abnormally small, with the largest seating less than 250, and the sound quality was abyssmal, with 3 of the 6 auditoriums featuring only mono sound.
I worked at this theater from November 1989 until May 1992. Carmike acquired it while I was employed there… I think it was in ‘91.
Was purchased by Carmike prior to 1993. After closing, the building was turned into a Gold’s Gym.
From Boxoffice Magazine, November, 1987: “Cineplex Odeon… plans to open a theatre with up to six screens in Waverly Place, a shopping center under construction in south Cary…. Cineplex has signed a lease with Waverly Place’s developer, H.S. Lichtin Developer Co. in Raleigh.”
