Flora Cinema

The Electric Cinema opened in March 1914 with a seating capacity of 500. By 1922 it was known as the Cinema. New owners took over in 1929 and it was re-named Empire Cinema.

In 1942 it was re-named Flora Cinema and in 1955 it was modernised, Cinemascope had been fitted, the proscenium was now 30 feet wide. By the 1980’s, the seating capacity had been reduced to 332 using just the stalls area. The Flora Cinema was closed in April 1985.

By 1989 it had been gutted internally for re-development and was used for storage. In 1998 plans were drawn to restore the building and work began in 1999. The Flora Cinema re-opened on a temporary basis on 23rd October 2000 with "Chickin Run".

In early 2002 the small independent Merlin Cinemas chain took over the 90 seat cinema, located in the former circle. It re-opened in mid-2002 with the film "Iris" with seating for 80 in this screen. A second screen seating 60 was added, opening on 12th February 2005. The building also contains shops, a cafe and a health studio.
