O.K.
This drive-in was located was located just SE of hwy 18, on County Highway 185 (near A St.) NOT County Highway 9.
A closer address (at least for Google) is Old Highway 18 and County Highway 185, Edgemont, SD. The drive-in was located just to the east and appears to be a auto salvage yard today. http://tinyurl.com/htcea2f
From the Sept. 3, 1955 Motion Picture Herald:
Clarence Calland, owner of the Isis, Edgemont, S. D., has opened his new Atomic drive-in there, with 300-car capacity.
Boxoffice, Feb. 27, 1966: “Clarence Calland’s Atomic Drive-In, Edgemont, S.D., was damaged badly due to high winds”
Boxoffice, July 16, 1979: “Clarence Calland has sold the Atomic Drive-In Theatre in Edgemont, S.D., to Tony Fries, who is a resident of the nearby town of Custer, S.D.”
A closer address is 28580 Old Hwy 18, Edgemont, SD.
Google Maps has updated their addresses and this puts it right in the middle of the property.
Today, it is an auto salvage yard that has greatly expanded on the original outline of the drive-in. To the point where all traces of the drive-in are no longer visible. Apart perhaps from the entrance/exit road.
