The Valley West was once a dollar first/second-run house when the late 1980s rolled along, just like the nearby Glenfair. The theater became a six-screener sometime in 1989.

On January 14, 1992, the Valley West Cinema 6 and the Diggety Dogs food outlet has filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy on the same day. However, the Valley West Cinema 6 was still operating at the time.

On July 31, 1992, the Valley West Cinema 6 closed for maintenance only. Keeping its 6-screens running in place, the theater would reopen nearly the following year in January 1993. Seven months later in July 1993, The Valley West Cinema changed its name to the “Valley West $1 Cinemas”.

The Valley West Cinemas was closely enough on its last legs when it became a $1 theater, and the cinema closed for the final time in May 1995.

I used to hang out here alot when I was about 13, my friends parents owned it twards the end when it was called MTC Cinemas. I spent alot of time in the booth. Screens 1-5 used Strong Super Lume-X lamphouses with simplex projection heads and screen 6 used an old RCA, I cant remember the particular model. All theatres used Ultra Stereo. The booth was a real fun place to be as a teen. There was a room up there where my friend and I would play PlayStaion It was real sad twards its last few years when it really went down. They stopped doing pretty much any maintenance. The curtains no longer functioned to open and close over the screen. The cue sensors went to disrepair and no longer operated the lights. If no one in the booth turned the lights on at lamphouse shutoff, it would just be a dim room. I can still remember some of the movies I saw there and in which theatre. Beavis and Butthead on 1, BaseketBall on 2, Godzilla on 3, City of Angels on 4, Matilda on 5, and Titanic on 6.

Lots of memories!

One fond memory, besides going to the movies, was the frequent antique book sales they had in the mall. I loved them.

I remember going to the mall to see movies there in high school in 1985-86. We always went on “tightwad Tuesday” and saw movies for a dollar. Saw “ Breakin” & “Breakin II” there. We sometimes went to other movies when our movie was finished. What great memories. I also have a copy of Eight Legged Freaks", so I’d have something to remember the theater by. Great memories!

Great theatre to see second run flicks for $1 or fifty cents on Tuesday. Theatres were inside the mall which opened in 1973. The major department stores moved out of the mall in 1993 but the theatres and mall remained open for a couple of more years. The 2002 film Eight Legged Freaks was filmed in the abandoned mall. The entire mall was demolished after the filming of the movie.

Actually, this theater was made into a 6 plex sometime in the 1980’s and was a second run theater. It closed sometime in the mid 1990’s when the mall was closed.
