FYI This theatre was supposed to be a 6 plex as judged by the photo but plans fell through. See GCC Hillsdale 4 in San Mateo and GGC Santa Anita 4 in Arcadia for more details. Later on, they had 6 plexes in Colton and Dublin CA and Scottsdale AZ. If at first you don’t succeed…
The big 12 screen megaplex down the street, actually opened it’s doors in 1997 I believe. This theater lasted for a few years after.

The Hanes Mall Cinema became a fixture for 25 years until it’s closing on October 10,2000 when Carmike Cinemas built on huge 12-plex just down the street from the Hanes Mall and nearby Interstate 40.
Open in 1976 as Winston-Salem’s first multiplex cinema.
Visited this particular cinema a few times in the mid to late 90’s. It was the only theatre showing the movie ‘Jawbreaker’ in the area and my teenage niece was dying to see it. The movie was awful, and the cinema was empty on a Friday night. This was back in early ‘99, so I’m surprised they kept the doors open until '01.
It is a good code. But Parents should know what the kids are watching. I wrote a lot more but decided to delete my feelings on the Motion Picture Code.
If “HAPPY GILMORE” was PG-13 they had no business even asking.
The Hanes Mall Cinemas also had competition as well in the late 1990’s,when Carmike Cinemas built a huge 12-screen multiplex just south of the shopping center near Interstate 40 and Stratford Road that put this theatre out of business in early 2001.
I remember growing up, this theatre being EXTREMELY strict on movie ratings. I went to see ‘Happy Gilmore’ and the attendant asked me several times if I was 13 years old, and if there was any way I could call my mother to assure her that I was of age! Interesting story regarding this theatre.. once the doors closed, the theatre sat vacant for a long time until Golden Corrall purchased the property to put up a restaurant. Upon demolition, they discovered animal carcases and bones, and there was a story on the local news channel that the animals were sacrificed by a satanic cult. It was never mentioned again and I don’t know what happened with the case, but pretty freaky!
