The Ritz was the last theater built exclusively for African-American patrons in Charlotte. It was built in the early 60’s and closed in 1971.

After closing in 1971 this theater reopened in 1972 as ‘The New Ritz’ and played movies for a few more years. It sat vacant for many years with the marquee intact before being demolished.
Bijou Entertainment Circuit of Nashville built the Ritz Theatre in 1961 operating on a ten-year lease. New operators operated it as the New Ritz Theater closing thereafter. The city considered turning the theater into a gym before deciding against that plan in the late 1970s.
A new pocket park was recentlydedicated on the site of this theater called ‘The Ritz at Washington Heights’ in honor of the demolished cinema. An outdoor stage will occasionally screen movies.
