IMC Omagh 9

The Studio 1 & 2 Cinema opened on 20th October 1975 as a twin screen cinema. In late-1991, it was extended to 4-screens. Seating capacities were given as 800, 144, 300 and 119.

At some time since 2000, a further 3-screens have been created, possibly by subdividing the largest 800 seat screen. Currently the largest screen seats 315, the smallest 90. In 2016 it was taken over by IMC Cinemas and was refurbished in 2017, adding another 2 screens which seat 126 & 76. It was closed in April 2022.

By September 2014 – see my photograph – the cinema had seven screens. According to its website, the largest (“Studio 1”) has 305 seats, while the smallest (“Screen 7”) has 145. All have Dolby sound systems.

The cinema opened on 20 October 1975 and was later reported to be the province’s first multi-screen cinema. Each screen had a different colour and the even numbers were no smoking at the time.

The cinema closed in April 2022. No official statement was made by IMC at the time but in reply to a tweet (29 April) the company said ‘it was closed for the foreseeable future’. The cinema is now on the market and still ‘fitted out for immediate use’. The commercial estate agent Osborne King states that ‘The front building is of modern construction with older original commercial buildings to the rear.’ The sale brochure also says that the buildings and car park run to 17,039sq.ft.
